In the Magistrate's Court recently * Chinaman residing in Haihing-street was charged with having opium in his possession. It was declared by witnesses that the opium had been in defendant's possession for eighteen years, and the case was dismissed, but the Magistrate (Mr. D. G. A. Cooper) ordered the forfeiture of the opium. On behalf of defendant Mr. E. G. Jellicoe moved the Supreme Court to have the order of forfeiture quashed, and Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, on behalf of the Crown, agreed that the order had been wrongly made. His Honour accordingly quashed the order, but reserved the question of costs.
