A SOLDIER'S FUNERAL

The funeral took place to-day of Trooper Charles Thompson, an invalided soldier, whose death occurred in Wellington yesterday. It was a full military funeral, and a large number of returned troopers attended to pay their last respects to the deceased. Chaplain Shaw, the Presbyterian chaplain from Trentham Camp, was the officiating minister. Deceased's father and mother arrived from Dunedin this morning, and were present. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), LieutenantColonel M'lntosh, and Captain Vine (records officer) also attended. The Trentham Band accompanied the cortege, and there was a large firing party.

Sergt. V. W. Cox, of the Army Service Corps, attached to the Trentham Regiment (Earl of Liverpool's Own) was promoted sergeant-major before leaving New Zealand. Mr. John Swinson, who was seriously injured in the railway smash at Whangamaxino over eighteen months ago, has ever since been in the Waikato Hospital at Hamilton. Writing to friends in Wellington, he states that he ie going to Auckland to have his leg Xrayed, and he has been given what he describes as " a month's holiday," three weeks of which he will spend at his home at the Hutt, arriving in Wellington on 23rd October. The Wellington Musical Union promises its patrons on Tuesday next, at the Town Hall, some idea of what a sea battle means, as described by Tennyson, and set to appropriate music by Stanford. It will also give a rendering of the historic French battle which was led by the maiden Joan of Arc. Madame Wielaert, of Auckland, has been specially engaged to sing the title role, and will be supported by Messrs. H. F. Green, of Masterton, and Charles Clarkson and Frank Charlton, of Wellington. Miss Phyllis Hanify will play Weber's "Concerto in F Minor," ' and Mr. Herbert S. Claughton will conduct. The attention of swinimcrs and lifesavers is drawn to an advertisement in rhis issue respecting a trip to Foxton and Levin under the auspices of the Royal 1 Life-saving Society.
