Isitt, Sir Joseph Ward (Minister for Finance) stated that at an inside estimate the loss for twelve months incurred before the new rates came into force was £61.000. By increasing the rates it was hoped to increase the revenue by £21,000. He was favourably disposed towards the press, and would like to see cheap rates, but the object of the Government was to reduce th^ losses on the various departments.
