WEATHER AND CROPS

There is very little change in atmospheric pressure, and fair weather has been experienced generally, with variable breezes. The present mild and hazy conditions, it is predicted, will give place to increasing cloudiness, with an unfavourable change to follow. Warm and humid is the description of th© weather to be expected in the meantime, but sultry north-west winds may be looked for in the next day or two on the eastern coasts of both islands. Easterly winds are probable northward of New Plymouth and Napier, and northerlies, increasing in strength else> where, preparing the way for the storm which has been predicted as due to pass in the south on or about Thursday next. Special reports received by the Department of Agriculture from field inspectors show that last week's rains are exercising a general beneficial influence on the country. Blenheim reports that the rain was all that was needed to assure a good harvest. Pastures are very fair, and stock is in excellent condition. • Wairarapa reports, -are favourable, but in Hawkes Bay it is stated that further rain is needed, as the subsoil is very dry. South Island districts benefited considerably, and the position is much improved on the East Coast, though a further rainfall is considered necessary to save the situation. Crops in the Fairlie district, according to a Timaru Herald report, are now assured of prosperous growth for some time to come. Renewed growth of pastures will save great numbers of stock.
