PETONE'S FINANCES
MAYOR ADVISES ECONOMY. " Be careful " was in effect the advice of the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) to Petone councillors last evening when referring to the financial position as- disclosed in the half-yearly balancc-»heet. As far as the general working account was concerned the debit was £3482. During the present year the rates would come in, which would have the effect of reducing the debit. With ordinary care by councillors the accounts should be satisfactory at the end of the year. Continuing, Mr. M'Ewan said the Waterworks Account was satisfactory, while the Gas Account showed a small credit of £17 5s lid. This was after transferring the usual amounts, including £250 to the General Account. With regarii to the expenditure on account of the sewerage loan there was available the sum of £19,000, which should be ample to complete the Bcheme. If it were not, they would have some serious questions to answer. Of the Advances to Ratepayers Account — £6000 — only £16 12s had been expended, leaving a balance available of £5983- Bs. After drawing attention to the posi- | tion of thft beach improvement and motor | 'bus loans, Mr. M'Ewan repeated the warning to councillors that if they were to keep within the limits of the estimates they would have to carefully watch the expenditure during the next half-year.
