, The Nurses' Club House in Kensing-ton-street was the scene of a very pleasant party yesterday afternoon, when the guests of honour were the nurses who are leaving with the next transports, and at the came time they received their service badges, which were pinned on by Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool. The Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Defence, gave a short address to the nurses, and spoke in high praise of the eagerness of the New Zealand nurses to serve at the front, and of the excellent record of work they had already established. He also specially mentioned the splendid work done at Trentham Hospital, which was beyond all praise. New Zealand soldiers, he said, preferred to be nursed by their own countrywomen, and he felt that that was a. compliment to both. He bade Matron Fulton and the nurses fai-ewell and good fortune. The Hon. 6. W. Russell added a few words, and thanked the nunees for their care of the men, and remarked that they should feel highly honoured et being the chosen ones out of six hundred applicants. Mr. Allen then called_ on the Mayor to speak, saying that his work,, and that of Mrs. Luke, was so splendidly ! done. Mr. Luke thanked Mr. Allen, j i and then wished the nurses good-bye and good luck on behalf of the citizens of Wellington. He felt it a privilege to be in the chair during the period of war, and paid a tribute to Mrs. Luke's excellent work, which was endorsed by all present with hearty applause. The nurses receiving badges were Mrs. Fulton, (wife of Colonel Fulton), who has been matron at Trentham, and who is in i charge of the contingent ; Nurses Douglas j j (Dunedin), Cumberworth, Scott, and Jes- j i sop (Christchurch), Stronach (Stratford), Keith, and Crispin (Wellington), all of whom have been nursing at Trentham; Nurses Goldsmith (Hawkes Bay), Brown (Hokitika), and Burnett (Clyde), who j have been stationed at Tauherenikau. The four nurses who returned by the j Tahiti, and ai-e going to the front again, are Nurses Nixion, Moore, Lowe, and. Inglis. After the presentation of badges j Her Excellency added her farewell and good wishes to the nurses, and gave them a number of books to read on the voyage. The rooms were decorated with quantities of spring flowers, primroses, ixias, hyacinths, and lilies, and the table was gay with anemones. Among those present were Mrs. J. P. Luke, Lady Ward, Mrs. Porter, Miss Craig, Miss Payne, Miss Bicknell, Miss Polden, and other members — friends of the Trained Nurses' Association. Later in the afternoon Miss Bicknell was presented with a pretty silver trinket bos "from Matron Fulton and the nurses of the 7th Reinforcements." New* has jusfc arrived of the engagement of President Wilson to Mrs. Norman Gait, who i& said to be a beautiful and charming lady of about thirty-eight. Her husband died about eight years ago, and the President's wife last year. It is believed that the wedding will take place in December. At the bazaar held at Mrs, Morpeth't house on The Terrace the sum of £45 was realised. It has been decided to dispose of the proceeds as follows : — £10 has been paid to Mts. Moorhouse for the St. John Ambulance work in connection with wounded soldiers, and the balance is to be remitted to the Officer Commanding the Base in Egypt, to be there expended by him in the purchase of comforts for our men at the front. The rooms had been prettily I decorated with roses, violets, and lilac, and the hostess and her friends enabled the visitors to pass a very pleasant evenA meeting of the trustees of the Con1 valescent Home was held at Mrs. Litchfield's, Pipitea-street, on Wednesday. Present : Mesdames W. S. Moorhouse (in the chair), 0. Watkins, Litchfield, J. Joseph, and Miss Harcourt (treasurer). Gifts were acknowledged from Mr. J. P. Maxwell. Mrs. J. R. Reyhurn, of Whangarei, is at present on a visit to Wellington, and fs the guest of Mrs. Gardner, of "Kardellah," Brooklyn. ' Another visitor froni Whangarei is Mrs. Ormiston, who has come to see her son, one of the Maunganui's engineers. Mrs. Bernard Wood, of Ghristchurch, is staying with Lady Ward. — . The monthly meeting of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the society's rooms on Thursday. Present : — Mrs. Algar Williams (in the cha\r), Mesdames Fitchett, M'Lean, Winder, Ward, Massey, Harcourt, Richardson, Ponsonby, Cook, Burd, M'Pherson, Corrigan, F. Leckio, Hosking, Misses Kirkcaldie, Barnett, Cable, and Peach. Apologies were received from Mesdames Ewen, S. Kirkcaldie, W. Luke, Anderson, G. Reid, M'Vicar, Viscountess Kelburn, and Miss Inglis. A leaflet was read, which had been sent from England, and which described the inauguration of the National Mothercraft Society, its aim being "To arouse public opinion to regard training in mothercraft as a normal part of women's education, and to promote efficient I mothercraft in the family and in the State." The president of the society is Lady Plunket; the hon. secretary, Miss Winifred Wrench ; the hon. treasurer, Miss Ursula Bethell. The nurses reported satisfactory progress in their work in the district, and wish to gratefully ack-> nowledge bundles of clothes from. Mrs. N. Kirkcaldie and Mrs. Finch- Mies Barnett reported that sewing meetings had been held on 7th September, and on sth October at Mrs. Hosking's house, | and that a, large number of baby gar- | ments had been made and sent to her by many workers for the society. A case was to be packed and sent to Mrs. Fergueson, at Portsmouth, for the sailor's wives, also many garments had been distributed locally. The next meeting would be held on" Tuesday, 2pcT November, at Mrs. Hosking's house, 20, Hob-son-street, beginning at 2 o'clock. A roll of Petone flannel and a piece of cash mere had been contributed to the Material Fund by Mrs. A. Levy. The following subscriptions to the fund are acknowledged : — Mrs. Algar Williams, £1 Is ; Mesdames La Trobe, Winder, F. W. Furkett, £1 each ; Mesdames C. Richardson, Hosking, and Miss Cooper, 10s each ; Mesdames Massey, Finch, Corrigan, Pondonby, Misses Barnett and Kirkcaldie, 5s each. Mrs. W. Luke, 3s.
