GOLD DUTY
INCREASE POSTPONED FOR A , YEAR. • The Legislative Council resumed s.\ 10 o'clock this morning, and after a brief sitting adjourned until 8 p.m. on Monday. The only business done was the adoption of an amendment to the Mining Amendment Bill introduced by Governor's Message postponing the imposition of the additional gold duty of 3d per ounce until next year. The purpose to which this- is to be devoted is providing compensation in cases of miners' phthisis, and Sir Francis Bell explained that the additional revenue would not be necessary in the meantime. The amendment to the Bill had been agreed to by Cabinet in. deference to the opinion expressed by several members of the Council that English investors in raining should not be taken by surprise. * The Hon. J. T. Paul remarked that the only excuse for the amendment was that the present gold duty of 3d per ounce was sufficient for present needs. He thought that the amount of compensation for miners' complaint would shortly have to be increased.
