NOTIFICATION OF CASUALTIES

A DISAGREEABLE CASE. (IT IEI.EGRAPH.—PKESS ASSOCIATION.) TIMARU, Bth October. A disagreeable case in relation to the notification of casualties occurred here. The parents of Tpr. R. H. Barton, of the Otago Mounted Rifles, Main Body, have had no news whatever of their only son, and supposed him to be alive and well. This morning a carter brought to the house a parcel with a tag attached, "Deceased, R.F.8., 9/548." The parcel contained a few personal effects and letters which his mother and sister had. written to him. Lacking any preparation, the receipt of the parcel with such a tag gave the parents, especially the mother, a great shock.
