ESSENTIALS OF A CAPTAIN.
Napoleon thus sketched the requisites of a great commander in a battle : "Not to worry, to have an open mind, to show no change in countenance, to giv« orders in the midst of fight with » much coolness as when perfectly at rest, are the test of worth in a general. To exhort the timid, to augment the small number of the brave, to stir up th« fight when it grows slack, 'to rally the troops when broken, to bring back fortune at a desperate crisis, to give one's lif* 2 necessary to save the State, are actions pre-eminently suitable to the warrior." On the intellectual side the great general must also bo pre-eminent for good judgment. He must (said the Emperor) poase«B a mind -which resembles the lens of a telescope, able to focus clearly all objects A brain which sees everything; a cHaracter which acts promptly and decisively; these are the essentials of the great captain.
