NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") In connection with the Wellington Eacing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday, 23rd and 25th inst., owners and trainers are again reminded that nominations close on Monday next, at 9 p.m., with Mr. A. E. Whyte (secretary). Margarita did not start in the Ascot Five Hundred. The Thousand winner, Carwelkin put up 8.5, 191b penalty, and won by half a head. In the Thousand, Margarita (10.0) was handicapped to concede Carwelkin three stone. At level weights the Victorians -would probably be on Carwelkin. The Karamu stable is said to possess a two-year-old above the ordinary in the colt by Hymettus — Florigold. He will probably make his first appearance in the Wellington Stakes, to be ran at Trentham this day fortnight. Sister Satellite, by The Welkin—Wilga, by Marco, cost 1125 guineas at fhe Melbourne March sales. In six months, in her first three starts, she has won 1000 soys in stakes. Weights for the OXC. Stewards' Handicap are due on Friday next. The penalty clause in connection with the Riccarton sprint race is as follows :—: — "The winner of any race or races collectively of the value of 100 soys, after declaration of weights, to carry slb; of 150 soys, 71b; 200 soys, MHb; 300 soys, 141b." Winners of either the Shorts or Nai Nai Handicap at Trentham will not have to put up any extra weight, but in the event of one horse winning both events he would have to put up 71b extra. It is hardly likely an owner would incur such a penalty for a race like the Stewards, which is worth 1050 soys to the winner. Nominations for the C.J.C. race appear in this issue. De Gama, who has been engaged in the principal handicaps at the Auckland Summer Meeting, made his reappearance at Epsom on 29th September. Ridden by H. Cairns, he carried lOst to victory in the principal handicap event, run over a mile in lmin 45£ sec. The New Zealand-bred Field Trix (Field Battery — Trix), full sister to Lanyard and Adroit, won to© Trial. Handicap the same afternoon. The veteran performer Medallist is to be engaged in the Spring Selling Plate at Trentham. He competed in the event named four years ago, finishing third to Aimwell and Kingswell, and the following day won the Pearce Handicap. Rongopai (Conqueror — Punawai) won the Rockbank Hurdle Race, two miles, at the Melbourne Hunt Club's Meeting on 25th September. Aviation recently got a nasty kick from a stable mate at Opaki, which will prevent him starting for some time. The A. J.C. Derby winner, Cetinge, was successful in the Hawkesbury* Guineas a week previously. Colonel Sou It was unplaced in the Hawkesbury Spring Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, Id which Gingo ("Varco — Wind Gun), 6.10, Royal Rufus, 6.8, and St. Carwyne, 9.3, filled the places. Athenic (8.10) ran second in the Rowley mile to Secret Service, 6.12, with Aurifer, 7.13, third. Mr. C. S. Abbott, who owned She grand dam of El Gallo, says she was one of the 1 first 'batch of the progeny of Badsworth, and was bred by Mr. Tom Carroll, brother to Sir James Carroll. Badsworth was a well-known Poverty Bay horse, who sired a few winners, including Bullwofth, who won some steeplechase events for J. M. Cameron, the Hastings trainer. , The Blenheim-owned Imarose has raced consistently in his three starts this season. He was second at Marton and third at Otaki and Horowhenua. Reputation has been engaged in the weigh t-for-age events at the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. Mr. Bidwill has engaged Deviation in the Auckland Cup. Since Imagination won a double at Tauherenikau, the president of the Wairarapa Club has not had much luck on his own course. Reputation won a race there as a two-year-old, but the members of the family to which he belongs did most of their racing away from home. William the Silent is a beautifullybred horse, by William the Third (son of St. Simon) from Silent Lady, by Cyllene — Miss Gunning 11., by Carbine— Memoir, by St. Simon— Quiver. The New Zealand Cup candidates Colonel Soult and Mummer are ongaged in the principal handicap events at the Auckland Spring Meeting. With Chortle engaged, Mr. Morse will have" no diffi"culty in finding a top weight. i In South Australia very few of the racing clubs encourage amateur riding. This is probably because the supporters of racing have good reason to remember some of the exhibitions of horsemanship given in events exclusively for Corinthian riders. However, at the Hunt Club Meeting^ last month all previous displays were* put in the shade by the extraordinary performance of Mr. M. O'Connor, who rode Waltz Time in the Novice Hunters' Steeplechase. At the end of half a mile Mr. O'Connor started to^leave the field. He led over the last fence by 100 yards. He was still that distance in front half-way up the straight, and then he began to pull up. By» the time he reached the stewards' stand about half a furlong from the judge's box his mount was walking, and he turned right round, presumably to salute the judge. In the meantime | Silver Stole slipped up on the rails and [ won easily. It was an extraordinary happening, and the stipendiary stewards showed their disapproval by suspendingMr. O'Connor for six months. It was interesting to hear what his backers said. | I ' WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING. After payment of second forfeits, tha following remain in the Wellesley Stakes, of 750 soys. For two-year-olds.
