UNION SECRETARY'S STATEMENT
FACTS IN REPLY. During the hearing of a prosecution in the Magistrate's Court "a few days ago, instituted by the New Zealand Furniture Trades Union against Scoullar and Co. for alleged breach of award, the secretary of the union, Mr. D. Moriarty, informed the Court that his union did not refer the case to the Labour Department for action, "for there had been far more cases won without the .help of the Labour Department than they (the Department had won themselves." Reference to the Department's annual report elicits the information that during the past four years the Department instituted 1890 cases, while unions were responsible for 37, out of which the Department was' unsuccessful in 1739, or 92 per cent., and the union in 21, or 57 per cent.
