THE BENEDETTO BRIN ACCOUNT OF THE DISASTER TERRIFIC EFFECTS OF EXPLOSION (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received October 8, 12.30 p.m.) MILAN, 7th October. The explosion which destroyed the Italian warship Benedetto Brin, on 29th September, shook Brindisi, and fumes covered the town like a mist, causing a feeling of terror. Admiral' Rubin Decervin left the vessel a few minutes before the fire broke out, but promptly returned, and was holding a ' consultation with the officers in the saloon when an explosion occurred, and the whole forward part of the ship was blown into the air. A hail of splintered steel fell on the houses and streets. The greater part of the ship disappeared under the water, which was not deep enough to submerge the whole vessel. The Admiral and most of the officers perished. The larger magazines aft did not explode. COMMONWEALTH MILITARY SERVICE GIFT BY WESLEYAN CONFERENCE. (Received October 8, 12.30 p t m.) Twenty aeroplanes flew over the Lower Morava and Lava, and dropped tjiirty bombs at Pajarevats and three, at Goritza. There were no casualties. We repulsed an attempt to cross the Save. VARNA BOMBARDED (Received October 8, 3.30 p.m.) BERLIN, Bth October. Two Russian cruisers are bombarding the Bulgarian port of Varna, on the Black Sea. GERMAN WAR NEWS ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT. (Received October 8, 3 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, 7th October. A German communique states: Before Dvinsk we penetrated the enemy's positions over a front of three miles. South of Lake Dryswajaty our fire destroyed a Russian brigade. The Russians attempted to break through between Lake Bogoinskoje and Smorgon. It was a costly failure ; 1300 , men were taken prisoner. Oar land batteries at the Bay of Riga seriously damaged a Russian torpedo boat. WESTERN FRONT HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The High Commissioner reports :— . LONDON, 7th October, 5.15 p.m. There was a violent enemy bombardment in the course of the night along tW -whole front- Nortii of Lasearpe, four successive counter-attacks against positions recently captured by the French have been completely repulsed. Iv the Champagne, the Germans at the end of the day of obstinate counterattacks against positions they had just lost north of Tahure, were everybere repulsed; the enemy losses were very heavy. At Eparges, the French exploded two mines, seriously damaging enemy works. In Lorraine a strong enemy reconnaissance tried to reach the French trenches at Athienville, but was atopped by wire entanglements and repulaed by curtain and infantry fire.
