(Maddens Creek).— Mary of Argyle, by Grafton— Herbina, by Roodee (brother to Chester) — Scandal, by Barbarian—Keepsake, by Yattendon— Scandal (imp.), by The Libel (sire of Traducer). f NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") In tho Craven Plate on Wednesday last, the New Zealand representative, Reputation, defeated last year's winner of the race (the flying Woorak), but had to strike hia colours to St. Carwyne, the bright particular star of the meeting. Although Reputation only- divided one stake, place money in two other events at the meeting brought his winnings up to nearly 2000 soys, which result is very satisfactory. The Martian colt's winnings might have been larger had the two horses been differently handicapped in the Metropolitan. Cagou and Radnor, who also started in the Craven Plate, were both good weight-for-age winners last season. In the Second Hurdles, Jack Rice conceded Diavolo 171b and a beating, and is evidently some class. The 400 soys stake only brought out three runners. The other starter, Rushcutter, is a halfbrother to Bimeter. Two of the placegetters in the Members' Handicap, for three-year-olds, were sired by Abundance, the best son of Pilgrim's Progress, j who won the V.R.C. and A. J.C. Derbies. Some of the third batch of the progeny of the successful sires Linacre and The Welkin showed up well in the finish of the Gimcrack Stakes. Sister Satellite, runner-up in the Breeders' Plate, again filled second place. She failed to concede a stone to Eulacre, who cost only 75 guineas as a yearling. -Her dam, Eulas, is by Grafton from Loch Mea, by Lochiel. The third place-getter, Poitrina, is one of Mr. E. E. D. Clarke's Victorian breed, ~by The Welkin from the .Hotchkiss mare Armigera, dam of Ingoda, winner of the Oaks -and St. Leger. At the March 'sales she was purchased by a patron of W. Kelso's stable for 220 guineas. -The Handicap winner, Limelight, is an English horse by Lally (Amphion — Miss Hoyden), a successful performer at two, three, and four years of age, winning £18,649. in stakes. Lally has- sired a number of winners in England, also Einsicht (winner of the German Oaks, 1912). The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Carnival will be brought to a conclusion to-morrow afternoon. St. Carwyne and Reputation are engaged in the Randwick Plate, two miles. Tim Doolan, Scots Guard, Kew, and The Pole are in the Dowling Steeplechase, three miles ; Sea Pink is in the Waverley Handicap, one mile and three-quarters ; Wallace Isinglass may take part in the Grantham. Stakes, one mile; and Toa Ter© is engaged, in the Final Handicap, one mil© and a-quarter and 100 yards. Manaro, winner of the Maribyjmong Trial Stakes, of 1000 soys, at Flemington on Saturday last, is one of the first batch of the progeny of the Persimmon horse Comedy King, who won the> Melbourne Cup. Snowy River (dam of Manaro) is an imported mare by St. Serf. Manaro cost 850gns as a yearling. Twenty-five youngsters remain in the Wellesley Stakes to be run" on the opening day of the Wellington Spring Meeting. Sir George Clifford, Hon. J D. Ormond, Messrs. G. T>. Greenwood, Vand E. Riddiford, and J. B. Reid each still have two representatives in the race. Mr. T. H. Lowry has left in Egypt (the Napier Park winner), and some of the others may be successful, in the Hastings and Dunedin Stakes. Last year the Wellesley Stakes winner (Asterias) had to put up 101b penalty in the Welcome Stakes, which went to Battle Eve, run-ner-up at Trentham. This year the Wellesley Stakes winner will again have to put up 101b extra, although the Hastings Stakes and Dunedin Stakes winners escape a penalty. The Victorian spring campaign opens at Caulfield to-morrow, when the programme of events to be decided includes the Caulfield Stakes '(weight for age), Debutant Stakes (for two-year-olds), Caulfield Guineas, and Toorak Handicap (one mile). Taringamutu ia to be ridden in tl» Hawkes Bay Guineas to-morrow by A. Oliver. Neither the horseman named nor J. O'Shea, who will Tide Desert Gold, have yet ridden the winner of tho race. Roumania was not brought home from Napier Park and is to compete at Hastings to-morrow. He is engaged in the Waipatu Hack Handicap, one mile, the distance of which 'will suit him better than a shorter journey. It was intended to send Menelaua (the full brother to Nones, owned by Messrs. Riddiford) through to Hastings for the Stakes, but, since the announcement that the Wellington Meeting will bo held, the programme will be altered, and he will make his first appearance in the Maiden at Masterton. The stable won this race with Miraculous last season. V.A.T.C. MEETING CAULFIELD GUINEAS ACCEPTANCES. (By Telegraph,— Press Association.— Copyright.) MELBOURNE, 7th October. MOUNTAIN KNIGHT ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN "DOPED." SYDNEY, 7th October The Sydney Sun's sporting editor writes: "It is now asserted that come enemy of the stable found an opportunity of getting at Mountain Knight and 'doping' him prior to his running in the Spring Stakes. Some time will elapse before he can. be put into active training ag.i n."
