NATIONAL RESERVE
The Brooklyn Company of the National Reserve assembled at the State School on Tuesday, and marched to the rifle range, where nearly an hour was devoted to work there in sight-testing and aiming. The instructor (Captain J. W. Steel), by means of discs, showed in _a practical manner how accurate shooting may be obtained with the rifle, 'lhe non-coms have formed classes, by which small squads of men will attend or five days of the week for theory and practice. Great interest is shown by the members in this work, and if tliis it? maintained good results should follow in the course of a few weeks. The rules of the Miniature Rifle Club are now in force, and have been framed " to assist and encourage members in the theory and practice of rifle-shooting, to become proficient marksmen; and generally to act as an aid to the military training of the Brooklyn section of the National Reserve." Members who desire to join this branch will have an opportunity soon of competing and showing their skill with the rifle. Owing to difficulties in the way it has been decided to abandon for the present the idea of a formal opening of the range. The Central Branch of the National Reserve paraded at the school grounds Willis-street, on Tuesday night under Captain Bowles and Lieutenants Mohr and Almao. The Company was put through various platoon movements, in view of the parade with Thorndon Branch on Tuesday next, 12th instant, which were well carried out, the men showing great improvement. The shooting match with Hataitai Branch was won by Hataitai by 21 points. The rifle range will shortly be ready for use, and the committee hopes this will increase the attendance, and also bring in new recruits.
