FURNITURE MAKERS
A question as to the interpretation of a clause in the Furniture Makers' old award — a new award came into force on Monday — was raised in the Magistrate's Court this week. The New Zealand Federated Furniture Makers' Trade Union claimed a penalty of £10 from Messrs. Scoullar and- Co.. Ltd., for a breach of the lilll award, in that the company did not pay travelling time to employees engaged in work at the Kelburn Training College. The defence was that the clause applied only to country jobs. For the union^ however, Mr. P. W. Jackson pointed out that when the new award was being considered strenuous efforts on the part of the employers to have the two-mile limit included in the clause failed. The old clause was reinserted with a slight alteration. Mr W. G. Riddell. S.M., reserved judgment. The defendant company was represented by Mr. T. S. Weston.
