Spring. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") Since his performance at Horowhenua, Maniaroa has come into favour for the New Zealand Cup. During the past few days Warstep lias eased in the market, since her stablemate (Snub) has, been reported to be the most likely of Mr. Dalgety's pair to start. Warstep has been handicapped above weight-for-age in the New Zealand Cup, and any wins will not affect her impost in that race. The attention of owners and trainers is directed to the closing of entries for the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held! on the 23rd and 25th inst. The prinoipal events are the Wellington Handicap, of -100 soys, one mile and a-quarter ; and Pearce Handicap, of 300 soys, one mile. There is a hack and hunters' steeplechase each day, also several hack handicaps, Selling Plate and Trial Plate. The Champion Plate, of 800 soys, one mile and a-quarter, should bring together the best horses at present in commission in the Dominion. Nominations for all events close on Monday nexfc at 9 p.m., with Mr. A. E. Whyte (secretary). At the annual meetirrg of the TaratahiCarterton Placing Club the following officers were elected for the ensuing year : — Patron. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C. ; president, Me. H. E. Bunny; vice-presidents. Messrs.. H. Judd and W. Howard Booth ; treasurer, Mr. S. C. Skelly; stewards, Messrs. W. C. Dellei-, A. C. Feast, A. Daysb, J. G. Oates, C. Reid, F. T. Playle; atKfitors, Messrs. J. Moncrieff and E. J. Chapman; hon. judge, Mr. J. W. Card ;■ timekeeper, Mr. M'Pheej handicapper., Mr. J. E. Henrys; starter, Mr. Pu. E. Harley. Five new members were eleufced. Seadown will not fulfU his engagements at the Masterton Meetj'ing. He will be raced at Trentham and Ricca-rton. Two of the first batch of the progeny of Rokeby are to contust the Hastings Stakes. They are members of J. H. Prosser's Porirua team — Sabana (the halfsister to Pavlova) and Rockbound (the half-brother to Athenic and Downham). Opportunity was taken to give them a gallop on the grass at the-Otaki Meeting. Sevtral of the local htwses engaged in the race were seen out at Napier l - :3t Saturday, including the winner, Egypt, who will have to put up 71d extra. Among the unplaced diviision was Barley Sugar (Maori King — Barley Bree), who is reported to be one -of the smartest gallopers at Hastings. J. O'Shea, who rides, ior Mr. T. H. Lowry's stable, appears, to get into all the trouble that 'is going. .It was thought the fine imposed on him at Napier was £5, not £50, for boring in on Barley Sugar in the Juvenile Handicap, but according to Napier papers he was penalised £50, which is a pretty stiff fine. At the busiest part of last season O'Shea had to stand dowiti for something that happened at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Owners are reminded tahat nominations for the Canterbury Cup,, Juvenile Plate, Metropolitan Handicap, 'Stewards' Handicap, Stead Memorial Gold Cup, Jockey Club Handicap, and M»2inbers' Handicap at the C.J.C. Sprinjj Meeting close to-morrow at 9 p.m. with. Mr. W. H. E. Wanklyn (secretary). Taringamutu has been tsent through to Hastings to contest tho Hawkes Bay Guineas, in which there tshould be about five starters. In recent years the race has lost a lot of its foriaer importance, when the Auckland team- competed there on their way to Riccarton, and this year it is practically a local ;race. The presence of representatives of the principal South Island stablea made the Wanganui Guineas, but neither Sir George Clifford nor Mr. G. D. Greenwood will have a runner at Hastings. There have on no occasions been hig surprises in connection with the race, but there does not appear to be any thing;, engaged likely to defeat Desert Gold. Acceptances for all events at the Masterton Racing Club's Meeting, to be held on the 14th instant, close- to-morrow, at 10 p.m., with Mr. A - . Hnthaway, secretary. The following is the an-xiual report of the Taiatahi-Carterton Racing Club: — The bank overdraft has "decreased. The club desires to thank Mi. J. W. M'Phee, J. G. Oates, F. T. Playle, and C. Reid. In his last five starts^ Conziska (by Conqueror — Ziska) has b«m beaten once, when he ran second to- Hushabye at Napier Park. He scored in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap at Napd««" on Saturday from Mandoline and Bonanist, who was conceding the winner 18Qr>. N.Z. TROTTING ASSOCIATION CHRISTCHURCH, 6th October. A meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held this afternoon. Present : Messrs. P. Selig (president), W. J. Hopkins, W. H. Denton, H. J. Palmer, H. W. Kitchingham, and H. F. Nicoll. A letter was read from the Hutt Valley Trotting Club stating that its name had been changed to the Wellington Trotting Club. The president said that it was necessary for the club to obtain the association's authority for the change of name. He suggested that the club should be advised to make application as required under Rule 48. The president stated that the case of the New Brighton Trotting Club was now in a position to be dealt with. He read a letter which had been sent to the aesociatiou in July last by Mr. R. O. Duncan, the club's auditor, who forwarded, a copy of a circular ho had sent to the members of the club with reference to its balance-sheet. Mr. Selig paid that when this correspondence came before the association it was decided to write to the club for an explanation. In the meantime Mr. E. A. Archer, president of the club, commenced an action for damages against the auditor, which for the time being stopped any further enquiry. Further correspondence from the club showed that an injunction had been granted to prevent the club from doing things which might have defeated the ends of justice. Though no official information had been received, it had been stated that Mr. Archer had discontinued his case, and now an official communication had been received from the club. It ■vvas decided that the matter bo dealt with in committee. On the motion of Mr. Hopkins, it was decided that, provided the association was satisfied, no license should be issued to any person who, in the opinion of any individual club under the jurisdiction of the association is an undesirable person to frequent that club's course. H. Cladding's application for a license was referred to the Auckland Trotting Club for report. The board was unable to deal with tlio New Brighton Club's case for want of a quorum, two of its members being members of the Ne^\ Brighton Club and .■thiefßforfr.iueligiblfe,tiP sit.,.
