IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT
SIR GEORGE REID'S VIEWS. (Received October 6, 11 a.m.) LONDON, sth October. Sir George Reicl (High Commissioner for Australia), in an article in the Evening News, states : "For many years to come any attempt to establish an Imperial Parliament worthy -of the name will be rejected. It has been my lifelong conviction that the, ties now binding the subjects of the King and Emperor cannot radically be changed without infinite care, because the present loose condition of things works well on the whole. An Imperial Parliament is a noble idea, but before accepting it as an ideal the question of its practicability must be considered. For every white subject of the King and Emperor there are six coloured. The problem of legislating would be of great complexity and practically impossible, as the races are in different stages of evolution. Formal ties do not count half as much as sentimental ones." LIQUOR IN WAR-TIME FURTHER CURTAILMENT OF - HOURS. LONDON, sth October. The Central Control Board is further reducing the hours for the sale of liquor in Londdn. They are restricted to from noon 'to 2.30 and from 6 to 9. Permits will be granted to nightworkers to obtain the necessary refreshments. THE NIGHT CLUB EVIL • MUST BE CONTROLLED. LONDON, sth October. Sir John Simon takes a. serious view of the night club evil and is determined to control it, conferring the necessary powers on the military authorities. IN THE DARDANELLES BOMBARDMENT OF BOTH SIDES OF STRAITS. (Received October 6, 8.35 a.m.) LONDON, sth October. Mitylene reports that -a light British squadron bombarded Turkish positions at Fenki on Monday. The Allies had placed long-range guns on barges and bombarded the forts on both sides of the straits.
