SOLDIERS' FAREWELL AT KAIWARRA

The people of Kaiwarra are justly proud of the manner in which young men born in the little suburb have responded to the country's call. Already they have sent, or are sending, eleven men with the New Zealand Forces, and each batch has been accorded a hearty farewell. Last evening another enthusiastic meeting was held for the purpose of bidding God speed to Gun. R. Wainwright, Tpr. J. Thompson, and Ptes. 0. Overend and W. Swan. The hall was crowded, and Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald presided. Mr. Fitzgerald said that, as an old resident of the district, it gave him great pleasure to preside at such a gathering, which was to honour so many brave young fellows willing to make the greatest sacrifice for their country and -for liberty. Each of the four was wfell known, and each had proved himself to be a man in the true meaning of the word. On behalf of the Kaiwarra Patriotic Committee, which acted for the residents, he made a presentation to the four soldiers to mark the esteem in which they were held. The recipients responded briefly. Several short addresses were delivered during the evening, and a musical programme was contributed as follows :• — Pianoforte solo, Miss L. M'Callum ; piano duet, Misses Laurenson ; recitation, Miss M. Casey; songs, Misses E. Flaws, Janet Munro, and Messrs. E. Lynneberg, R. E. Flaws, and R. Cameron.
