WESTERN CAMPAIGN UNSUCCESSFUL BOMBARDMENT. (Received October 5, 2.45 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, 4th October. A Berlin communique states : Five monitors unsuccessfully bombarded Zeebrugge yesterday, killing three Belgians. Our offensive against the British front is progressing. The French successfully hold a small portion of a trench north-west of Givenchy. We repulsed their attacks elsewhere, and also repelled attacks at Massiges and Ville-sur-Tourbe. We caught their troop concentrations with our fire, inflicting heavy losses. Our airship successfully bombed Chalons station. THE EASTERN FRONT The Russians, after a strong artillery preparation, attacked General "Yon Hindenburg's forces between Postawy and Smorgon. The attacks collapsed, with heavy enemy losses.
