ON THE TIGRIS THREE DAYS' BATTLE
ENEMY FLEES TO BAGDAD. LONDON", Ist October. Official. — After three days' fighting, we dislodged the Turks from their positions on both flanks of the Tigris, seven miles below Kutelamara. The northern defences were carried by a gallant assault. The Turks fought with the greatest tenacity, and had to be dislodged trench by trench. Their losses in dead were severe. The Turks fled to Bagdad. We occupied Kutelamara, and took prisoners numbering 1650. The enemy's trenches were elaborate, and extended for miles, with an extensive mine system. Our casualties were 500, mostly light wounds. The High Commissioner reports : LONDON, 30th Sept., 9.30 p.m. In recent operations on the Tigris, the position of the enemy on both banks' of the river below Kutelamara was captured by a British-Indian force, after a desperate resistance by the Turks. The total prisoners taken numbered 1100 and 650. The total enemy force was estimated at 8000 regulars, 'assisted by many tribesmen. Our casualties were under 500, including 20 officers. i
