WEATHER AND CROPS

SOUTHERN DROUGHT. No rain is reported from Canterbury, though skies all over th'e district are dull to overcast. According to the Timaru Post, farmers in the Geraldine district were disappointed on Wednesday morning when the clouds rolled by once more. About 2 o'clock/ however, a thunderstorm passed to the north-westward, and rain fell for about half an hour. This shower, however, appears to have been merely local, and not by any means satisfying at that. The meteorological report to-day indicates that the barometer has been very unsteady, rising in the North and falling again in the South. Rain has fallen on the West Coast and in the southernmost districts, but fair to cloudy weather has ruled generally. Moderate to strong southwesterly winds have prevailed, but are now veering to northerly, and are likely to increase in force. Warnings for westerly gales are exhibited in and southward of Cook Strait. Indications are for squally and changeable conditions generally, with rain in the western and southernmost districts.
