German comment is that a severe blow has been received, but that a great break has not occurred, and a heavy struggle must be expected. Descriptions of the fighting show that it has been appalling in its intensity, the slaughter being awful to contemplate. In the Argonne, where the Crown Prince is in command, the latest attack by the enemy is declared to have been the most furious of the war, and the result was that only portion of French trenches- were taken. The German reserves are said to be made up of men from the fringes of the Empire, and the necessity is dire to keep this soldiery up to- fighting point. The offensive on this front has had the effect of easing the grave tension in the east, especially at Vilna. Mackensen's army is in a serious situation, and is on the defensive.. In- the south the Austrians have abandoned the offensive in order to resist the Russians' great counter-offensive. Austrian stocks of 'munitions are exhausted) and Germany is supplying her need. e'An 'Amsterdam message states that the-Kaiser is sounding Germanic rulers regarding peace..
