" J. AND A. WILSON, LTD., . Buckle-street. [ — — — — i— — i— ABOUT A DOLL i , • A great deal of time was occupied by Mr. W. G Riddell, ,S.M., yesterday, in the hearing of a dispute concerning the , winner of a raffle held by the Combined Drapers' Committee in connection with i the June carnival. Miss M. E. Taylor, secretary of the committee, sued Mrs. i J. H. Ward, wife of Joseph Ward, railway porter, Woodville, for the recovery of a bridal doll valued at £10, or, in case possession could not be had, the ■ sum of £10. It was alleged that, thinking Mrs. Ward was the agent for Miss | Rhoda, Ward, a little girl living at RoseI neath, she had been handed the doll by . mistake, and had since refused to return • it. Lengthy evidence was given to prove ■ that Miss Ward, of Roeeneath, held the winning ticket, although it was admitted that Ward had been handed the doll. His ' Worship decided that Miss Rhoda Ward was the true winner of the • doll, and he could not understand how defendant had secured possession. It 1 was eyident, however, that Mrs. Ward had acted quite honestly. Judgment would be for plaintiff for the return of j the doll or payment of the sum of £5. ' No costs .were allowed, as the mistake > was one which might have been easily avoided. People who conducted raffles should be more careful.
