CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR SOLDIERS
♦ A STIMULATING EXAMPLE. Time* is short for the despatch of Christmas gifts to New Zealand's soldiere in Gallipoli and to wounded men in hospitals of the Old World. One of the many activities of the Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) is in arranging for the forwarding of parcels and for wise expenditure of money given for this purpose. A very pleasant letter was received yesterday by the Mayor from Messrs. Thompson Bros., merchants, Wellington. The text runs: — "For years it has been our custom at the festive 6eason to give the majority of our customers Christmas presents. This year it is our intention to allow our customers, through ourselves, to give their presents to the brave boys at the front. For this purpose we have allocated £100,_ which is approximately 2G per cent, increase on the previous year's cost. We therefore hand you our cheque for that amount for a fund to be inaugurated for the purpose of purchasing and supplying Christmas dainties for the boys. "We believe there are many other merchants who will be only too pleased to act as we are doing, and we therefore suggest your_ giving publicity and encouraging subscriptions of a like nature. "Should you already have a fund established, our amount can be placed to the credit of same. We would, however, distinctly point out that we wish our clients' gift to be applied for the men. actually at the front or in hospital." The cheque has been entrusted to Mrs. Luke's committee, which is busy with work of this kind.
