DARDANELLES ATTACK
DID RUSSIA REQUEST IT? (Received October 1, 2.45 p.m.) LONDON, 30th September. Mr. R. L. Outhwaite in the House of Commons asked ' whether Sir George Buchanan's (British Ambassador) statement from Petrograd was true that the attack on the Dardanelles was partly due to a Russian request, so as Ito divert the Turks 'from the Caucasus. Lord Robert Cecil, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, replied that the operation doubtless drew the Turks from the Russian and Egyptian fronts. A fuller statement was inexpedient.
