The final of a series of card tournaments arranged by the Wellington Fire Police, and played at the various sta tions, was held at the Central Station last evening. Cards were played until 9 o'clock, when the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was asked to present the prizes, certificates, bars, and medals. After 1< years' service in the Wellington Fin Brigade, Deputy-Superintendent Stewart is about to sever his connection with the brigade, and the opportunity was taken to make him a presentation. The Mayoi spoke in high terms of 1 the Deputj Superintendent's service with the brigade, and pointed out the loss thai would be felt as a result of his retirement. Superintendent Tait also spoke feelingly of his long association with Mr. Stewart, and expressed regret at the loss of his service. Captain Wright, of the fire police, also spoke highly of Mr. Stewart. The presentation took the form of a, silver watch, and to Mrs. Stewart two silver ornaments, and the fire police gave Mr. Stewart a silvermounted cream jog and sugar bowl. The following service awards were alsc presented by the Mayor:— Station Officer F. Grint, one bar, making nine' years' service; Station Officers H. Nation and T. B. Clarke, medals, making five years' service; Senior Fireman N. Galbraith, certificate, three years' service ; \Fireman W. E. Briggs, bar^ seven years' service ; Lieutenant Short, fire police, medal, seven years' service. Winners of card tournaments :■ — Fire Police : Lieutenant J. C. Cusack, Messrs. M. Ogden, sen., F. Ballinger, G. Mackenzie, and Reynolds. Brigade: Superintendent Tait, Firemen Ogden, jun., Nugent, Kjar, and Jones. TRY IT.
