"LES CLOCHES DE CORNEVILLE"
* FOR, A GOOD CAUSE. ) Tho Wellington^ Amateur Operatic Society, whose members have not been lacking in the past to help a cause that needs assistance, is making every effort i to raise a substantial sum towards the •war funds by the performances it is giving in the Grand Opera House of that old and popular comic opera, "Les Cloches de Corneville." As president of the society, the Attorney-General, the Eon. A. L. Herdman, has written the following letter to The Post, drawing the attention of the public to the work ■which the members of the society have undertaken : — "May I be permitted- through the medium of your columns to invite the citizens of. Wellington to give their support to the entertainment which the members of the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society are giving during this ■week in aid , of the fund 3 established to help the soldiers who return from the ;war? About the excellence of the entertainment there can be no two opinions, and with its object every man and woman in the city must have the keenest sympathy. The ladies and gentlemen of the society have willingly and generously placed their energies, their talent, and their time at the service of the men who have done for us more than we can ever hope to repay, and although citizens have so many times responded to calls for help with a liberality which is more than prodigal, I venture to appeal to them to help the 60ciety. of which I have the honour to be president, to make a substantial addition to the amount which has already been so generously subscribed."
