SEPARATION ALLOWANCES

MARRIED MEN IN THE BRITISH ARMY. (MOM ODlt OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 30th July. Lord Devonport, in the House of Lords, asked for a return stating the number of married men enrolled in the army since the outbreak of war, and the amount of separation allowances paid to wives and dependents. In reply Lord Newton said the Government would not be prepared to give the return asked for, but he could give approximate figures. The number of mar- ' ried men at present drawing separation allowances was, approximately, 606,000 in tho Regular Army, and 237,000 in the Territorial Forces, making a total of 843,000. These figures included men who we/c in the forces at the time of mobilisation. The aggregate amount of separation allowances paid to the wives and children of married men since mobilisation was, approximately, 25 millions. This did not include separation allowances paid to dependents other than wives and children.
