"TRUST THE MINER" THEY NEED NO GOADING
THE NEED FOR UNBROKEN COAL SUPPLY (Received Jona 28, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, 27th June. Mr. Runciman has intimated to both employers and employed that, as South Wales supplies the bulk of the fuel for the Allied navies, there must be no stoppage. An immediate agreement is imperative. Mr. Robert Smillie (president of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain), in an interview, said he resented the yoke of compulsion, as implying that it was necessary to goad the workers to greater efforts. He added : "Leave it to our sense of duty. We will come as near half-killing ourselves to carry the war to a successful issue as any not actually in the firing line. Trust the miner. Any shortage of sheL's will not arice from any shortage of coal." LONDON, -27th June. Mr. W. Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, presided^ at a further conference of coal-owners and men, but the negotiations are still without result. The owners are disinclined to concede a new agreement extending beyond |)he war". Arrangements have been made for a national meeting of masters and men ;to consider" the coal output, including a co-operative scheme. The men threaten to resist compulsion
