NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Sir Lancelot.") The nominations received for the principal events at tho Grand National Meeting must be considered very satisfactory. There are forty in the Grand National Steeplechase, forty-two in the Hurdle Race, and fifty-seven in the Winter Cup. By extending the nominations till midday on Saturday the club got one or two extra, but in so doing did not set the other clubs a good example. Although he has not won either tho Great Northern o? Grand National, Glenmore is about the best-performed 'chaser in commission at present. His first attempts were in the hunter class at Marton and Rangitikei, where he did not show form that pointed to his turning out a good. One. Next season he was taken to Riccarton and ran two seconds and a third at the Grand National Meeting. He won his first race at Trentham in the spring, and scored again in the autumn. He won the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase and ran second in the June Steeplechase. He appeared again at Riccarton the following August, and won the Beaufort Steplechase. He also won the ' Wanganui Steeplechase and the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerelie. Last season he appeared at the Grand National Meeting for the third time. He ran third in the Grand National with 11.0, second in the Beaufort Steeplechase with 11.9, and third in the Lincoln Steeplechase with 11.9. His only successes- last season were at Randwick and Flemington | in the, spring. He carried 12.2 when be won at the V.R.C. Meeting. The two races were worth, 800 soys. He picked up 425 soys in stakes »fc Napier a»d Hastings. He will have to carry 12.0 at Gisborne. With the exception of Golden Glow, the company is moderate. The withdrawal of Sauci from the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race may mfean that his owner has decided to continue racing him on the flat for the present instead of over hurdles. With 10.11 he was well taken care of in the Flemington race, and his stable mate Tim Doolan, a. Grand National winner, was just as leniently treated in the Steeplechase. In previous years Gisborne form has not been considered sufficiently important to affect the form at Wellington, but this year winners at the East Coast fixture will have to put up penalties at Trentham. Mr. W. Murray, of Dannevirke, who used to race Moral, won a couple of races at the Pajk with Conziska and St. Omer. Conzjska (Conqueror — Ziska) was formerly trained by Walter Garrett at OpakL The only race she previously won was a Trial at Carterton, when W. Garrett owned her. St. Omer (a three-year-old filly by Moral — Energy) ttcored her first win in the NeWstead Hack Handicap, in which she beat Haumakaka and others. The dam of St. Omer is a well-bred mare by > The Officer — Industry, a South Australian got by Nautilus — Elizabeth Villiers, by Gang Forward. Mr. H. Gaisford owned Energy, and bred a. colt and filly by El Draque from 1 her. Then followed St. Omer, a filly by Conqueror, and two colts by Carl Rosa. Mr. Pat ScaJly, owner of Ascalon, bred St. Omer. Hereford's name is missing from the entries for the Grand National Hurdles, and it looks as if the Fontenoy — Melinite gelding, who won just on £1000 in stakes this season, is under a cloud. IThe trip to Auckland may have knocked Corrie out, as her name is missing from the Grand National Hurdles. The names of all the principal steeplechasers in commission are included in the big cross country race except Bercola. When they met at Hastings Ruatangata was conceding Hurakia weight, but at thp. Park, when the latter • won, he conceded his opponent a stone, and beat him. The pair did not meet on Saturday, when Ruatangata, (Seaton Delaval — Flower of Gold) carried top weight and won. Ruatangatai showed some form in hurdle races last winter at Ellerslie, when be won the Maiden Hurdles and ran second to Admiral Soult in the Orakei Hurdles. At Trentham he was beaten a head in the Vittoria Hurdle Handicap by Parewanui. Chortle and Multiply have been engaged both in the Winter Cup and in the Grand National Hurdles. The names of Tim Doolan, Scots Guard, and Clontaft, at present racing in Victoria, appear among the nominations for the Grand National Meeting. Hurakia, Glenmore, and Master Malachi, winners at Napier Park, will each carry 71b extra at Gisborne on Thursday, next. The Hutt Valley Trotting Patriotic Meeting, postponed from Saturday last on account of the weather, will be held on Saturday next. It is suggested that fresh entries should be taken, to enable the members of D. Nyhan's team that were competing at the Waikato' Meeting on Saturday last, and any others, to take part. ~ ,
