COUNTING THE VOTES
STAFF OF BUSY CLERKS. About 1 p.m. to-day the final count of votes commenced in real earnest at the Patriotic Association Mart. A staff of clerks had been assembled, and they soon set to work under the direction of Mr. T. Wells, Deputy Returning Officer. Ballot boxes had been collected from various points, and these were emptied into two large military kitbags, which they filled to the brim. Next came the task of sorting. On a long table fifteen boxes had been set, each having a candidate's number. Into these boxes the voting tickets were placed. A spectator popping his head in at the door might have seen the cards piling up in three boxes^ — Mrs. Algar Williams's, Miss M'Kegg's, and Mies M'Cormack's. Soon the boxeft were full Sorting was then transferred to another set of boxes, -while the full boxes were removed to be counted by a special staff. About 2.30 p.m. cheques commenced to come in. The Commercial Travellers' emissary put in a substantial sum, and there was support for the St. John Ambulance candidate, also from an unexpected quarter. Just on 3 p.m. the first bag of votes was counted and the totals added to the votes previously registered.
