NOT DOING ENOUGH
FEDERAL POLITICIANS AT' VARIANCE. OPPOSITION LEAVES THE HOUSE. MELBOURNE, 24th June. In the House of Representatives three months' supply, totalling £8,611,581, was passed. Mr. Cook, Leader of the Opposition, drew attention to the fact that Britain was spending three millions daily on the war, while Australia, with one-nintl) of the population, was only spending forty thousand. He maintained that i^ustralia wa# not doing enough. On the fsecorid reading of the First Referendum Bill, Mr. Cook moved an amendment that, in view of the war, the Bill be not proceeded with, that there should bo a cessation of all party conflict, and that measures absolutely necessary to the most strenuous prosecution of the war and the proper administration of public business aloneshould be dealt with. The Speaker took exception to the wording of the amendment. Mr. Cook, in withdrawing it, announced that his party would not participate in the debate. He led the whole Opposition from the House, Ministerialists continuing the debate. After the six Referendum Bills had passed the Committee stage, Mr. Cook *nd the Opposition returned.
