MORE MOUNTEDS

THE EXTRA 1000 MEN HOW THEY WILL BE RAISED THE -LUCKY "SEVENTHS." General approval has been expressed of the Government's decision to increase the rate of reinforcements for Mounted Rifles from 10 to 15 per cent., and to make the quota restrospective, thus necessitating the calling up of another 1000 men. The news was specially well received at Trentham, where the Mounteds of the 7th Reinforcements are furnished with the prospect of getting away much earlier. It is understood that the increased force will be made up by merging the 7th Mounteds, who are already in camp, with the 6ths, and calling up an additional 200 men, who will accompany the 6th Reinforcements. A fresh 7th Reinforcement draft for Mounted Rifles will be. called up in August, and also the balance required to make up the new 1000. Although at firet sight this would appear to involve sending insufficientlytrained men to the front, that will not be the result. It must be remembered that the horses of the Mounted Rifles now in Egypt, are being cared for by men who are quite efficient to take their place in the firing line. The insufficiently trained men to be sent from New Zealand will be able to take charge of the horses, thus releasing the trained men for the front, and will go on completing their training. The Defence Department announces that the 200 men now being recruited will only be taken into camp on the distinct understanding that they will get no leave. It is hoped that the men concerned will accept this opportunity of being able to get away from New Zealand after a short period of training in the spirit which it is offered, and during the time they are in camp will strive to attain as high a standard of efficiency as possible. If they desire to see their friends they are urged to get *hem to go out to Trentham and not waste valuable time in going elsewhere.
