A VALUABLE FLAG
SOLD FOR £21,574 WAIRARAPA'S RECORD. \ Sales at auction have realised tremendous sums of money at times ; but it is dpubtful if the celebrated Christie's auction rooms in London could produce a' record much better than that established at the Masterton Boxing Carnival last night, when a flag was sold for £21,574. Wairarapa sold a flag, and boug_ht < a reputation for generosity and patriotism. The flag was presented by Mr. A. P. ' Whatman, president of the Boxing Association, and his bid of 1000 guineas was the first recorded. The enthusiasm .which this aroused continued throughout the sale, and culminated when, amid tremendous, cheering, Mr. Whatman finally purchased the little bit of bunting for 2000 guineas, making his total contribution 3000 guineas. Turnbull and Co. yesterday resulted in a contribution of £2113. Another £8000 has been contributed in the Lower Valley, making over £40,000 subscribed in the Wairarapa in less than < week for the Wounded Soldiers Fund. Over £70,000 ,has, up to the present, been subscribed in the Wairarapa for the various patriotic funds.
