SPLENDID SPIRIT OF THE MEN
GENERAL GODLEY'S PRAISE. PROUD TO COMMAND THEM. (Received June 24, 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Senator Pearce quotes extracts from a personal letter from General Godley, dated. 7th May, paying a tribute to the gallantry of the 4th Brigade and the Otago Battalion^ Ho adds: "I am afraid it will be impossible to send accurate casualty lists for some time, so spread out is the fighting. Companies and even battalions had to be pitched into the fight immediately, wherever they were wanted, with the result that the men got very intermingled. At present it is impossible to 4 tell what proportion of the brave men reported missing have been killed." He concludes by praising the splendid spirit of the men, who como out of the trenches exhausted, hungry, and harassed, but twelve hours later go back as fresh as ever, and says : "I can never Bay how proud I am to have such an excellent and splendidly gallant body' of men iinder me as I have the honour to command."
