WELLINGTON CLEARING HOUSE FOR MILK SUPPLY

K> TB» EDITOR. Sir, — Having paid a penalty which, had a clearing house 'been established, I should not have had to do, perhaps you will be good enough to spare me a small space in your valuable paper in order that I may ask a few questions. How it it, Mr. Editor, that a few months ago (just prior to the municipal elections) we heard so much from you about the urgent necessity of a pure milk supply for the city of Wellington, and that, since then, all has been quiet on the subject? Can you. or any of the City Fathers, inform me what, has been done since then, or what they intend to do in the matter? I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the. whole question is just going to be quietly laid aside, and allowed to sleep for two and a-half years, to be aroused suddenly before another election, and . made into the principal plank of so many platforms by aspirants for a seat on the City Council. Are you short of space and ink, or j are you tired of advocating the necessity of a better system of inspection ? When has the necessity of a clearing house for milk; leased to exist? How is it, sir, that the lives of our children were of so much more value in the eyes of the council a few months ago than they are now . Can you tell me who is really responsible for the dolay in estabÜbhing a suitable clearing douse, or houses, aftrr all that has been baid, and after the necessity of jjiicli a place or places has linen dntnonstmted by '

everyone of the many authorities on such matters? I am not blaming the present inspectors, but, sir, you know as well as I do that not 5 per cent, of the milk used in Wellington at the present time undergoes inspection of any kind. This matter has been discussed often, and it is high time that the responsible persons (whoever they may be, from the Premier downwards) should be brought to light. I trust that some abler pen than mine will take up this matter, as, if there was a need for the clearing house three* months ago, there is just ns much need at the present time. — I am. etc., W. T. STRAND. Lower Hutt, 22nd June.
