MAGISTRATE'S COURT
♦—_ j A short sitting, of the Magistrate's Court this morning' was presided over by Capt. Hennah and Mr. R. D. Hanlon, J.Ps. For insobriety, Mary Sprowell was fined £1, with the alternative of seven days in gaol, William Card was fined ss, or 24 hours' detention, and two first offenders were convicted and discharged. James Jones and Joseph Hannon were charged with being idle and disorderly persons in that they had insufficient lawful means of support. Both pleaded not guilty. , Hannon said he had enlisted, and was only waiting to be called up. Inspector Hendrey; "Men like this are not worthy to fight for the country." Captain Hennah, after looking at Hannon's list, said: "I 'cannot understand the Defence Department enlisting a man' with such a record." Both men were convicted and sent to gaol for three mbnths. George Albert Ward, who had been arrested the previous day by Detective* Sergeani Lewis, on two charges of stealing a postal packet containing money, was remanded till the 30th inst. Bail was allowed in a personal bond of £25 and one surety of £25.
