BATTLE OF SOUCHEZ
PNE OF THE BIGGEST OF THE WAR. (TIMES AND STBNKr SUN SERVICE!) (Received Jttne 23, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 22nd June. The Times military correspondent says that the fighting afc Souchez, which has been progressing for a month, has reached an intensity entitling it to be classed as one of the big battles of the war. Along a front of six miles the enemy has been forced to concentrate eleven divisions in the fighting. On bothi sides a quarter of a million men are engaged. The French losses wero heavy, but the results more than justify them. The booty exceeds that at the victory on the Marnej also ten thousand prisoners were taken. OFFICIAL' REPORT FROM PARIS (Received June 23, 9 a.m.) PARIS, 22nd June. A' communique states : — The Belgians captured German trenches south of St. Georges. All the defenders were killed or made prisoner. The enemy attacks at various points i» the sector north of Arraa were completely repulsed, except south-east of Souchez, where the enemy regained a foothold in portion of a trench. The enemy sustained heavy losses in the labyrinth. In Lorraine we> advanced 300 yards northward of Reillon. We further advanced beyond Metzeral and captured prisoners and three machine-guns.
