SICK AND WOUNDED
DE. VALINTINE TO TAKE' CHARGE , 'A' change in the army medioal service is .announced by the Hon. James Allen, Minister of Defence. Dr. Valintine, In-spector-General of Hospitals, who was formerly a military officer, has been brought back into the service, and given the special title of Director of Military Hospitals. In the course of an inter* view with a reporter the Minister stated that Dr. Vahntwe's help was required at the present time to avoid any conflict between the Publio Health Department and the mihtftsjr. The doctor would take oharge of all sick and wounded men at Trentham, m hospitals, or anywhere else in New Zealand, and he would be re sponsiblo to the Minister of Public Health (Hon. R. H. Rhodes), who would for thiß purpose act as Deputy-Minister of Defence. Sick and wounded men returning from the front would be handed over from the troopships to the Director,. of Military Hospitals and his staff. Colonei Purdy, as Director of Medical Semec. would have to deal with .the Territorial.., the fitting-up of troopships, and tho on listment of recruits for the Expeditionary Forces. As to the appointment of offieei'u of the New Zealand Medical Corps for service abroad. Colonel Purdy and Di\ Valintino would work together. This was necessary, because Dr Valintino, ns head of tho Department of Publio Health, was interested in the diatribu* tion ot medical men throughout New Zealand. Colonel Purdy and Dr. Valintine would consult as to whether any doctor applying should be allowed to join, the New Zealand Medioal Corps for service abroad, and when a man had joined Colonel Purdy would say when he should go a way.
