THE TURF

.—. — ♦ FIXTURES. June 26 and 28— Napier Park B.C. Winter, July 1 and 3— Gjsbornc E.C. Steeplechase. July 1* and 17— Wellington B.C. Winter. July 21— Manawatu Hunt. July 28— Pahiatua Racing Club. July 2S— Woodlands Hunt Club. NOTES AND COMMENTS ! (By *'Sir Lancelot.") | The handicaps allotted some of the New Zealand performers engaged in the principal handicap events at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting appeared in yesterday's issue. In the Epsom Handicap, one mile, the Sydney Cup winner, Lily Veil, heads the list with 9.6, which impost is 41b less than Gigandra received last year. Reputation (9.1) is giving weight to the well-performed Traquette (8.12) and Carlita (8.9), two fillies of tho same age as Mr. Bidwill's colt. After hi 3 recent failures at Brisbane, Athenic (8.10) has been let down by the handicapper. The much-boomed Lord Multifid (8.6) has got about a etone more than he is entitled to on performances. He lus won a small race at a, Melbourne suburban meeting. Sonite (7.2) js the Field Battery horse W. Davis took to Sydney. Davis has persevered with him, and ,has recently been re warded with a couple of small wins. La Penna (6.11) is a filly by King Rufus that ran a mile in lmin 41sec at the A.J.C. Autumn Meeting. Cagou (9.5), 'who heads the list in the Metropolitan, one mile and a-half, was paid a similar compliment twelve months ago, when he had 9,5. Mountain Knight (9.5) has to concede Reputation (8.13) 51b, and the latter in turn gives Carlita. and Traquette 61b and 71b respectively. Lord. Multifid is placed above Bon Ton (8.0) ■ and Cfierubhii (7.10). At Adelaide Bon Ton ' rap second in the Alderman's Cup, ono j 1 mile and a-half, to his stable-mate Orvieto. Cherubini has not done much racing on the other side, but if he could be got back to his three-year-old form would have an excellent chance. 'Mr. Vivian Riddiford has purchased the English mares Silver Beacon, by Campfire II. — Silver Grid; Maisonette, by Grand Duke — Ophelia,- and Partigal, by^ Parthian (the Grand Flaneur horse who won the Champion Stakes in Australia) from Guinesse. The same owner's Innocence (by Downshire — Purity) is to be mated with Martian this season. , The absence of Bercola's name from the list of entries for the Wellington Steeplechase probably means fliat the career of the well-performed chestnut gelding, by The Officer — Noon, is drawing to a close. Had he been rested diu> ing the spring and summer seasons, ii> stead of kept going, and had the Sydney trip been cut out of the programme, he would probably have picked up a stake dn'ingthe winter months when the tracks are soft. Bercola was rather a disappointment as a fiat racer, but made a name as a successful hurdler and steeplechaser. He was seven years old before he was put to the jumping business. He won a hack hurdles race each day of the Stratford Meeting, and won at Taranaki. His first important win was at Riccarton in the autumn, when he scored in tho Kildare Hurdles. The same season he won the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, and Great Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie. He went on to Riccarton and won the Grand National Steeplechase. At Riccarton last August he ran second in the Grand National Steeplechase, carrying 11.13, and second in the (Lincoln Steeplechase, carrying 12.5, , He has done a good deal of travelling this season, and although he faijed to win a race has won 480 soys. in stakes. 1 It is not often a two-year-old is raced' twice the same afternoon. Dimitol (Pistol — Dimity) ""won a double at the Port Ad#iaide races on the 12th instant. Very satisfactory acceptances have been received for the Waikato Trotting. Club's Meeting, to be "held on Saturday next. There are seventeen horses left in the Waikato Gup, including Rothschild Excelsior and Todd Bells. Plunder, who won five races on end earlier in the season, went wrong after competing at the Wellington Cup Meet* ing. She is quite sound again now, and ran one of her best races in the Winter Handicap at Hastings, in which she 'was unlucky to bump up against Heather Mixture (in receipt of two stone), who w,as improved with the racing and travelling he has had. Plunder has so far only won 320 a soys in stakes, so that she is ctill eligible to compete in the hack class. She has been engaged in open company at Trentham. Scots Guard, who does not appear to have any the best of it on the same mark as Tim Doo]an in the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, has been entered at Trentham. This season Scots Guard won three races in the Dominion. He won the Hunters' Steeplechase on the second day of the Auckland Spring Meeting, _the Handicap Steeplechase at the Thames on Bo.xing Dag, and the Autumn Steeplechase at • Ellerslie at Easter. '
