Some of the many recruiting posters which made an appeal to the young men of England to join the colours arrived in Melbourne by the last English mail, and they are now displayed outside the Town Hall in Swanston and Collins streets (says the Argus). There were few in the crowds of pedestrians who were not attracted by the posters. All day and in the glare of the electric lights at night the pavements were partially blocked by people, the greater percentage of whom were men, all reading the various appeals with their appropriate illustrations. One poster was addressed to the women, and read : "Some of your menfolk are holding back on your account. Won't you prove your love for your country by persuading them to go?" Another, which depicted a broken line of khaki-clad recruits, said : "There is still a place in the line for you. This place is for a fit man Will you fill it?" Under photographs of the late Lord Roberts was printed : "He did his duty. Won't you do yours?" Other posters exhorted men to "Rally Round the Flag. The Empire needs you. What are you doing for the Empire? If you cannot yourself join the army, try and get a recruit." In the others the appeal was also strikingly made, and if the interest evinced by the thousands of young men who were attracted by tho posters be taken as an indication, then the array of coloured prints along the concrete walls of the Town Hall should be productive of a greater response to the call of the Empire. Mr. David B. Russell, resident agent of Atui, Cook Islands, is staying at the I Hotel Cecil. Messrs. J. B. Clarkson and Co. have decided to donate £500 to the National Fund for Wounded Soldiers. Provision ia also being made by the firm for those moraboi's of tho staff who enlisted.
