THE CARNIVAL

CAFE CHANTANT CLOSES CROWNED WITH SUCCESS. The great success of the Cafe Chftntanfc in aid of the candidature of the Com' bir#<d Drapers' Queen wa« maintained right up to the close of the function. The bazaar was open on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening, prior to vhe resumption of the. fair, another fancy dress parade N of helpers was hHd. Damp, miserable weather did not cool the ardour and enthusiasm of those taking part, and with tlie band playing vigorous marches the parade wended its way through the main .streets, with dozens of lighted Chinese lanterns to give its added brightness and gaiety. As had been the case since' the Cafe Chatitant opened, the Town Hall was crowded, and the hundreds of assistants in fancy dress had a strenuous time in disposing of goods and tickets for raffles. Business was good, cash of the realm being handed over freely with little or no demur. Towards the close the goods left unsold were submitted for auction by Mr. Nicol, who had great difficulty in disposing of them before midnight, owing to the purchasers demanding that the articles should be resold. During the evening an excellent concert programme was provided, but was ? little marred by the din and bustle in the hall. Those who contributed were Messrs. T. Quefee, R. Meates, Hamilton Hodges, Miss Lottie Barry, and Miss Nellie Driscoll. The orchestra, under the coiiducfcorship of Mr. W. M'Lachlati, played enjoyable selections. After the bazaar had closed the tired male assistants had to set to work to dismantle the stalls, and the task was not completed until well after midnight. The raffles, which were not drawn on Saturday evening owing to pressure of time, will be drawn this week on an evening to be announced. roseneatlts"efforts. Miss Eileen Brew presented a charming bouquet of violets and freesiae to Mrs. Luke. The room in which the sale was held was gay with drapings of flags, and the stalls made a good display of useful and attractive articles. They were in charge of the following :— Produce, Mrs. Smith. A sale will be held in Mount Cook Schoolroom on Wednesday' next, at 2 o'clock, in aid of the Ambulance Society's Red Cross stall. A jumble eale was held in, the W.C.T.U. Rooms, in Constable-street, on Saturday afternoon, the proceeds of which were to further the candidature of Miss Palmer (Public Service) for Queen of the Carnival. The idea of the sale originated with some ofC^he girls in the Treasury Department, who at once circularised others, so that though collected in less than a week a large amount of clothing was spread out for sale.
