In furtherance of the candidature of Dr. Platts-Mills, the tramways candidate, tho Wellington Tramways Employees' Union held a "'social" in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, last evening. Card-playing and dancing were indulged in, and were thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd present. A gift evening was held in the Public Trust Office last night, when numerous articles, such as produce and tobacco, for the Civil Service stall at the Carnival were handed in. The proceeds will be devoted to the candidature of Miss Palmer, the Civil Service nominee. During the evening Miss Palmer made a capital little speech, urging those present to do all they could to help a good cause. Many gifts have been received by the St. John Ambulance committee for disposal, and will be sold by auction next week. A gold bracelet has been presented by Miss Anderson, of the G.P.O. staff, a book case by Mr. Scoullar, a dinner and tea service in Sevres china valued at £100 by_ an anonymous donor, and a diamond ring valued at £50 by another anonymous donor. Another Sunday concert •will be held in the Town Hall to-morrow night by the Commercial Travellers, Warehousemen's, and Central Clubs. A first-class programme has been arranged, among the contributors being Miss Mina Caldow. The concert will commence at 8.30 p.m., and there will be a silver coin collection. Under the auspices of the same committee, Mr. Peter Dawson is to give a concert in the Grand Opera House on Wednesday next. Mr. Dawson has agreed to give his services to help on the fund. It is anticipated that the Grand Opera Hoose will be crowded on the night of the concert. The box plan for the concert will open at Begg's at 9 o'clock on Monday morning. A Maoii concert will be given in the Town Hall on 22nd June. This will also be under the same auspices and for the same fund. Maoris from all parts of New Zealand will take part, as the Maoris are anxious to assist the fund,/ and towards this end have offered their services. The concert will be under the patronage of Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Liverpool, the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Ministers, and the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). In connection with this concert the committee has a scheme for the allocation of seats which it will announce shortly. Dr. Platts-Mills's supporters are organising a concert and the list of artists assisting is as follows : — Mrs. E. H. Queree, Miss Rene Queree (pupil of Madame Carreno), Miss Mina Caldow (New Zealand contralto), Messrs. A. Segrief, W. Lonsdale, K. Quill (Otaki), Nurse Te Au (Otaki), Messrs. Bernard Page (city organist), Hamilton Hodges, E. J. Hill. J. M. Clark, E. B. Gilchrist, Signor Vitetta. and the Lyric Four (Messrs. H. F. Wood, W. Jennings, W. Goudie and E. Connors). The box plan is novv open at the Bristol. Mr. Baxter Buckley has consented to give a pianoforte recital in the large Town Hall on Wednesday evening. He has_ drawn up a splendid programme, which includes, among other items, a very . appropriate collection of short national pieces, under the heading "Allies' Group. ' Vocal items will be contributed by Mr. Frank Charlton and Mr. T. D. Collins, whilst Miss Esther Fisher will act as accompanist.
