LOCAL AND GENERAL » The Evening Post Sports Edition, to be published to-night, will contain reports and results of all the day's fixtures] which are of a decidedly interesting nature. The Rugby game between Athletic and Trentham at Athletic Park is the chief attraction. The Association game between Diamonds and V.M.C.A. A at Anderson Park should provide interesting football. League football, hockey, harriers,, and other forms of sport are also going on,, and will be reported in the Sports Edition. The latest war news will be given, as usual. In view of recent statements that certain banks are refusing their employees leave to enlist, and as two banks have been mentioned as examples to the contrary, we have been asked, in fairness, to state that the Commercial Bank has at present one-sixth of its New Zealand staff enlisted or gone to the front, besides having about one hundred members of its Australian staff absent. Full salary is paid by the bank for the month in which officers leave, and half salary thereafter. Their positions in the bank are kept open, and their interests in the bank's provident fund preserved. To-day is the anniversary of the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. Amounts placed in the Post Office Savings Bank on deposit by of any fund approved by the Governor under section 2 of the War Contributions Validation Act will receive interest at the rate of 3| per cent, up to £300, and 3 per cent, on sums above that amount. For the convenience of soldiers at Trentham Camp, alterations have been made in the railway time-table, and special trains will be run on Wednesdays and Saturdays, leaving the Defence Siding, -Trentham, at 5.3 p.m. and 5.46 p.m., and arriving at Wellington at 6.1 p.m. and 6.37 p.m. Return trains will leave Lambton Station at 10.20 p.m. and 11 p.m. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the 5.3 p.m. and 10.20 p.m. trains only will be run. Lately Wellington has enjoyed days which have deceived the birds. Thrushes and blackbirds have given a melodious thanksgiving service for the brevity or absence of winter, and the choristers apparently believe that the cherry trees will soon be in blossom again. Some fruit trees, too, have also responded to a "false alarm." Recently a pear-tree in Boulcott-street had a display of blossom — sufficient to be clearly visible from the street — and in other localities apple trees have shown flower. In tht grounds of the Porirua Mental Hospital three seasons — spring, summer, and autumn — may be felt in a single day. While mushrooms still sprout on the closely-clipped turf of the football field, beds of petunias, African marigolds, and dwarf nasturtiums flash a wealth of colour in the sun by tho main carriage-way. A Wairarapa correspondent writes, asking if there is any excursion to Wellington on the occasion of the Queen Carnival on 3rd June. The reply is that holiday excursion tickets, available for return until Saturday, 19th June, will be obtainable from any station to any station on the North Island main line and branches from Ist to 3rd June. These tickets are available for break of journey at any station over twenty-five miles from the issuing station. '"This department , like all others, has suffered the loss of several of its members, who have left for the front ; this is especially so from the ranks of. the volunteer firemen, who will, I trust, uphold the traditions of the cloth they have vacated," reports Superintendent Tait, of the City Fire Brigade.
