' ' FIXTURES. • Juno 3 and 4— Otaki Maori R C. Winter. . June 3 and s— Dunedin J.C. Winter. - June 3, 5, and 7— A.R.C. Great Northern ' Steeplechase. *„ June 18 and 19— Hawkes Bay J.C. Winter. ' June 25 and 26— Napier Park R.C. Winter. , July 1 and 3— Gisborne IJ.C. Steeplechase. : NOTES AND COMMENTS I ' (By "Sir Lancelot.") J The large amount of stake money I earned by Reputation this season in .'. classic races and Indigo's performance -ia the New Zealand Cup, in which he «■ put up a dead heat with Warstep, has -■been responsible for considerable discussion in racing circles as to the merits '-of three-year-old performers past and present. With the great increase in the nujnbt>r and value of classic races it is much easier now for a horse to get on the four-figure list than a few seasons •back, whed there were fewer stakes of less value. Present-day handicappers appear to treat three-year-olds much more leniently than was the case ten or fifteen years back. One of the greatest performers as a three-year-old that raced in the Dominion was the Vanguard coll Advance. He scored on ten occasions out of fifteen starts. In the Auckland Easter Handicap, one mile, he carried 9.6 (which included 51b penalty for winning the Dunedin Cup) and won easily in lmin 42sec. The following day he won the Century Stakes, one mile and a-half, carrying 9.0 (including 101b penalty), and again won easily in 2min 39sec. On the concluding day of the meeting Advance scored in the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half, carrying 10.5, in 2min 40 l-ssec. When six years old Advance carried 10.4 and won the Wellington Cup very easily in 2min 34 l-*ssec. C. Jenkins, who rode the black horse that day, subsequently informed me that he thought he could have won with 11.0. A few weeks later Advance was .started in the Wanganui Cup, one mile and three-quarters, handicapped at 11.3. This was probably the heaviest impost ever earned in nn important Handicap in the Australasian colonies in the last thirty years. ' Another great three-year-old performer was the Seaton Delaval colt Nonette. He unfortunately came in the same year as the Yaldhurst team Menschikoff, Royal Artillery, and Cruciform. -. After a clash with. Menschikoff in the Ha-wkes Bay Guineas, in which the Aueklander came sepond, he had to avoid R. J. Mason'e brilliant lot, and take on all ages in handicaps. He scored on eight occasions out of thirteen starts, and pnt up a winning record of £3960, better than any of the Yaldhurst lot, which stood until the present season. One of Nonette'e greatest admirers was the late; Mr. G. -G. Stead. The colt made liis first appearance at Avondale early in the season (in September) and scored in the Cup, one mile and aquarter, and Guineas. At Hawkes Bayhe ran *hird ix> Okoari and Perfection in the King Edward Handicap. In the Guineas, Menschikoff put up lmin 41 l-ssec, and beat Nonette five lengths' Returning home, he won the Great Northern Guineas. At the Auckland Summer Meeting he put up four great ' performances. In the Cup he finished ' two lengths behind the, four-year-old St. Michael, who was in receipt of 101b. In the Summer Cup, one mile and aquarter, he carried 9.0 and beat a. good field. _ In the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a-half, he carried 9.4 and again beafc a good field, St. Michael, 9.0, being third. In the Grand Stand Handicap, one mile and aquarter, he carried' 9.10, and was beaten a length by St. Michael, 9.5. The latter came on to Wellington and worn the Cup, ' and ran second in the Racing Club San ! dicap, carrying 9.9 to The Shannon's 7.7. ' At Wanganui Nonette carried 8.11, and won the Cup, At the Auckland Autumn, Meeting he won the Easter Handicap, carrying 9.11, in lmin 42sec. He also won the Century Stakes, beating Tortulla and Beddington, who were placed in the Wanganui Cup. In the Autumn Handicap, in heavy going, he failed with 10.6, lib more than Advance was successful with. During the past eight seasons, horses owned by Sir George Clifford have won '£57,664 in stakes. His best season was in 1911-12, when the wearers of the "blue and gold chequers" gathered in £12,030. This season the only members Of the Chokebore Lodge team that failed to 'win were Quarantine (who ran second in the Metropolitan), Boldstroke, Wharf- ! inger, and the two-year-old Harlequin (who was twice" placed at Trentham). The other members of the team won one , or more races. Flying Start (with five ' wins) was the most successful member of the team. The members of the team I won £8802, bringing the total winnings of the Canterbury sportsman to £66,466 for nine seasons. ', '. From the appended figures it "will be Sieen that the amount received by the Treasury for the financial year ended 32st March last, for totalisator tax of 1 2£ per cent., has more than doubled during the past five years: — ■ Total tax. The horse was bred in New Zealand, but belonged to Messrs. Turner Bros., of j Victoria, at the time of his death. Royal ' Fusilier was thp sire of Rathlea, winner i / of the last Toorak Handicap, also Tete-a-tete, Bsklume, Blue Lake, and other useful performers in the Dominion. , J. H. Prosser went through to Otaki ', this morning with a team of eight horses'. | Chillies is now trained by H. Pritchard, at Opaki. At the Adelaide sales this month, the Soult horse Shuja was passed in at 120 guineas. F. Tutchen, who rode Awahou at Wanganui, ha« gono across to Sydney to ride Cheddar and Hcote Guard m their engagements at Randwick. Tutchen rode tho last-named when he won the Autumn .Steeplechase at Ellerslie. , . i Multiply may be nominated for the | Grand National Hurdles. Young will nde the last-named. F^ Carmont's stable has two in the Eahui Handicaps-Master Achilles, who is also in the Flying Handicap, and Powder Fox. Soporific has accepted for the Steeplechase, with all his, 12.8. Cornelian has dropped out, ana as he did not accompany his stable mates to Auckland, may have gone wrong. Agatha Green has also failed to accept. The Porirua stable will be represented by Naupata. The latter is also in±he Birthday Welter. The hack races have all filled well.
