FRENCH CLUB.

' There was a good attendance at tVie French Club last night. The audience included visitors from Tahiti. The proceedings began with a French song from Mr. Spencer. Madame Do Cleene gave a very interesting lecture entitled, "Classiques, Romantiques, et Modernes Comparees," treating the three periods in French literature — the classical period, which was at its height two hundred years ago; the period of romanticism, which found its most brilliant exponent in Victor Hugo; and the modern period. Madam De Cleene illustrated each period by readings from representative authors. The readings, in which she was ably assisted by her daughter, Mademoiselle de Cleene, were all given in a fine elocutionary style A cordial vote of thanks to Madame and Mademoiselle de_ Cleene was passed by acclamation. Notice was given that, at the next meeting, in addition to a lecture, there would be some specially selected readings chosen for this session. The proceedings ended with the singing of the "Marseillaise."
