TRADERS AND BANKERS.
Will Germany, after the war, regain the Russian trade? Writing on this question, an English mercantile man points out that "it is only the large firms with free capital that stand any chance of competing against the übiquitous German merchant in the matter of credit. German commerce is so backed up by the German banks, and such loan and discount facilities are extended under the German banking system to support the foreign trade, that unless English bankers support British traders seeking business from Russia in a way that German banks support German trade, the British smaller manufacturers are outclassed from the beginning. The question of extension of British trade in Russia is in my experience dependent more upon the attitude of the British bankers than upon tile energy of tho British merchant."
