NEW BATTALIONS

GOING INTO TRENTHAM " THE POSTING OF OFFICERS BANDSMEN AND BUGLERS WANTED. The men of the new battalions having been called up, commenced going into camp at Trentham to-day, and further batches will arrive to-morrow and on Monday, thus bringing the units up to' their full strength. Some 200 stalwarts arrived by train from Taranaki last evening, and spent the night in the Drill Hall, Buckle-Btreet. Two hundred and fifty Canterbury men also arrived by boat this morning, and, with the Taranaki representatives, were sent out to Trentham later, being followed by the Wellington city and suburban contingent of some 120 men. Large numbers of men also arrived at Trentham to-day from the Main Trunk, Hawkes Bay, and Wairarapa districts, and Trentham consequently wore an even more busy appearance than usual. The men upon arrival were taken charge of by their officers and n.c.o.'s (who have already been undergoing instruction at Trentham over a month), and t were at once equipped and given their quarters. Taken generally, the men are of an excellent stamp, being quite up to the high standard established by the reinforcement drafts. Like the latter, they will undergo training for a full four months before leaving New Zealand. The new battalions henceforth will be known as "The Trentham Regiment (tho Earl of Liverpool's Own)," and should not be confused with the infantry for the 7th Reinforcements going into camp on the 12th proximo. The new battalions, if they are to be cheered in their work at Trentham and while campaigning in Europe, should be provided with bands. It will be remembered that when the four battalions comprising the New Zealand Infantry Brigade, now at the front, were raised in August last, they were each equipped with bands by their respective districts, and the hope is expressed that in this respect the two battalions of the Trentham Regiment will not be overlooked by the public of New Zealand. It has been ascertained that two complet* sets of band instruments and drums can be procured for £300, and to supply this therefore a contribution of only £75 is required from each of the four military districts. As the Southland people have already promised to contribute their •hare if the other districts give theixs, a satisfactory response is looked forward to. The personnel of vhe two bands will be composed of 32 bandsmen and 32 buglers (playing bugles and drums alternately), and it is hoped that thcee will be forthcoming.
