ITALY'S INITIAL SUCCESS
TROOPS IN AUSTRIAN TERRITORY LORD FISHER AND THE ADMIRALTY ZEPPELINS VISIT SOUTHEND
Italy's intervention fn the war, The Times military correspondent states, is a severe blow to Austro-German strategy, especially in the stupendous operations in Galicia. The Italian Army has met with a gratifying initial success, bombarding and silencing the enemy's guns, and, is now on Austrian territory. Fighting continues to be desperate on the San, and still shows no sign of a decisive result. The enemy is using artillery on a tremendous scale, and is bringing up reinforcements. There is a renewal of activity at Ossowiec and Lomza. A disconcerting item of news is the sinking of H.M.S. Triumph in the Gulf of Saros by an enemy submarine. Fighting on the land continues with success to our forces. 'A French submarine has sunk a Turkish destroyer near Constantinople. Further appointments have been made in the British Government, and there are rumours that Mr. Asquith will retire and that Mr. Lloyd George will become Prime Minister.
