A "DO-WITHOUT" FUND

TO Til DITOIt. Sir, — May I make a suggestion through your columns to those boys and girls, and young men and women, who feel that the few odd pence or shillings they could spare would not be worth sending in to any fund. I had decided to buy two articles which I might quite legitimately say I needed, the cost of which would have amounted to 10s. However, on consideration I decided that I could very well do without them, and so spent tho money on wool to make comforts for the soldiers. Now, I would like to suggest the establishment of a " Do-without " Fund, to which all the self-denial pence and shillings could be contributed. If parents, school teachers, and employers throughout the Dominion would do their best to further the idea I am sure that quite a large sum monthly would be added to the National Fund or the maintenance of our Hospital Ship. This is a time when everyone can and should do something, and, moreover, should realise that it is an honour to have a part, however small, in this great fight for liberty and justice. When mothers and fathers, wives and children, are giving their best and dearest for our honour and safety, we can surely forego a few worldly pleasures in order that we may help ' them in every way possible. Perhaps ] you, Sir, would suggest a working basis for such a fund. Possibly the simplest method would be to install " Do-with-oufc" collection boxes in the homes, schools, and places of business, and they could be emptied at intervals. Thore would be no limit to age or amount, but J the fund would be essentially for boys and girls and young men and women, who have a habit of spending small change on unnecessary and frivolous things, and should not in any way interfere with systematic contributions. — I am, etc., E.A.M. P.S. — Perhaps the fund could be inaugurated by making next week a selfdenial week throughout the Dominion by way of raising our first contribution to I the Hospital Ship. 19th May, 1915.
